Canada and Northwest Territories Governments Finalize Ten-Year Agreement for Canada's Hay River

March 25, 2023 - The governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories have announced the signing of a landmark ten-year agreement for the Hay River, a vital waterway that connects the two regions.

The agreement, which comes into effect immediately, aims to ensure the long-term sustainability and protection of the Hay River, which is a critical transportation route for both communities. The agreement will focus on collaborative management and conservation efforts to preserve the river's ecological integrity and support the economic and social well-being of local communities.

"This agreement is a significant milestone in our efforts to protect the Hay River and its surrounding environment," said Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Dominic LeBlanc. "By working together, we can ensure the continued health and vitality of this vital waterway, while also supporting the economic and social development of the regions it serves."

The agreement will also provide for the development of a comprehensive management plan for the Hay River, which will involve the creation of a joint committee comprising representatives from both governments and local stakeholders. The committee will be responsible for monitoring the river's health, addressing any environmental concerns, and implementing measures to prevent pollution and promote sustainable use of the waterway.

"This agreement demonstrates our commitment to working together to protect the Hay River and its importance to our communities," said Premier of the Northwest Territories, Caroline Cochrane. "We look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to ensure the long-term health and prosperity of this vital waterway."

The agreement is the result of several years of negotiation and consultation between the two governments, and marks a significant step forward in their joint efforts to protect the Hay River and its surrounding environment.
