Ethereum Developer Virgil Griffith Released from Jail After Serving 60-Day Sentence

A prominent Ethereum developer and artist, Virgil Griffith, has been released from jail after serving a 60-day sentence for allegedly violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by teaching North Korean officials how to create counterfeit US currency.

Griffith, who was arrested in February and charged with violating the IEEPA, was released from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday. The 42-year-old developer was taken into custody after he traveled to North Korea in 2019 to teach a workshop on cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.

According to court documents, Griffith's trip to North Korea was deemed a violation of the IEEPA, which prohibits the export of goods and services that could contribute to the development of weapons of mass destruction. Griffith's lawyers argued that his trip was a peaceful exercise of his First Amendment rights and that he did not intend to violate any US laws.

Griffith's release from jail comes after a federal judge reduced his sentence from 48 months to 60 days, citing the fact that he had already served 30 days in custody. Griffith's lawyers have vowed to continue fighting his charges, stating that they believe the government's case against him is "weak" and that he was unfairly targeted for exercising his right to free speech.

The case has sparked concerns about the limits of free speech and the potential consequences for individuals who engage in international travel and cultural exchange. Griffith's release from jail has been met with widespread relief from the cryptocurrency and blockchain communities, who have rallied around him in support.

"Virgil's release is a huge relief for the entire community," said Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in a statement. "We are grateful that he is finally free and can continue his important work in the field of blockchain and cryptocurrency."

Griffith is expected to continue his work in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space, where he is known for his innovative approach to decentralized systems and his commitment to promoting digital freedom.
