Former Trump Supporters Flock to Biden Campaign, Citing Concerns About Democracy and Economy

A growing number of former supporters of President Donald Trump are defecting to the campaign of Democratic nominee Joe Biden, citing concerns about the state of democracy and the economy.

According to a new survey, nearly 20% of Trump voters in 2016 have switched their allegiance to Biden, with many citing concerns about the president's handling of the economy and the state of democracy.

"I used to be a die-hard Trump supporter, but after seeing the way he's handled the economy and the way he's attacked our democracy, I just can't support him anymore," said one former Trump supporter, who wished to remain anonymous.

The survey, conducted by the polling firm Morning Consult, found that 17% of Trump voters in 2016 have switched their allegiance to Biden, while 12% have become independents or declined to state a preference.

The shift is particularly pronounced among white working-class voters, who were a key demographic for Trump in 2016. According to the survey, 25% of white working-class voters who supported Trump in 2016 have now switched to Biden.

The survey also found that a majority of Trump voters who have switched to Biden are motivated by concerns about the economy and the state of democracy. Many are also citing Trump's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as a reason for their defection.

The shift is a significant blow to Trump's re-election campaign, which has been struggling to find traction with voters. The president's approval ratings have been stuck in the mid-40s for months, and he has faced criticism for his handling of the economy and the pandemic.

The Biden campaign has been actively courting former Trump supporters, particularly among white working-class voters. The campaign has launched a series of ads and events targeting this demographic, and has been touting its plans to invest in the economy and protect democracy.

The shift is not limited to white working-class voters. The survey also found that 15% of Trump voters who are women have switched to Biden, as have 12% of Trump voters who are veterans.

The survey was conducted among a sample of 2,000 voters, including 1,000 who supported Trump in 2016. The results have a margin of error of +/- 2 percentage points.
