FBI Warns About New Extortion Scam Targeting Sensitive Data

The FBI is warning the public about a new extortion scam that targets sensitive data, including personal and financial information.

The scam, known as "Doxing," involves hackers threatening to release sensitive information unless victims pay a ransom. The hackers typically gain access to the victim's computer or network through phishing emails or infected software, and then demand payment in exchange for not releasing the stolen data.

According to the FBI, the Doxing scam is particularly dangerous because it targets sensitive data that could cause significant financial and reputational harm. The agency is urging the public to be cautious when receiving unsolicited emails or messages and to never pay a ransom to hackers.

"We take these types of scams very seriously and are working to identify and prosecute those responsible," said a spokesperson for the FBI. "We urge the public to be vigilant and not to fall victim to these types of scams."

The FBI is also providing tips to help prevent Doxing scams, including:

  • Being cautious when receiving unsolicited emails or messages
  • Never paying a ransom to hackers
  • Keeping software and operating systems up to date
  • Using strong passwords and keeping them confidential
  • Being aware of phishing scams and never clicking on suspicious links or attachments

The Doxing scam is just the latest in a series of cyber threats that have been targeting individuals and businesses in recent years. The FBI is urging the public to be vigilant and to take steps to protect themselves from these types of scams.
