Bel engineer held for sharing classified info to Pak handlers: Karnataka HM

Bengaluru, Oct 28: A 25-year-old engineer from Belgaum, Karnataka, has been arrested by the police for allegedly sharing classified information with Pakistani handlers, said state Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy.

The engineer, identified as Rakesh Kumar, was picked up from his residence in Belgaum and taken to the city for questioning. "He was sharing classified information with Pakistani handlers through social media platforms. We have seized his laptop and other electronic devices," Reddy said.

The police said Kumar was working at a private firm in Belgaum and had access to classified documents. He allegedly shared the information with his Pakistani handlers, who were posing as friends on social media.

The Home Minister said the engineer's activities came to light after a thorough investigation by the police and intelligence agencies. "We have found that Kumar had been sharing sensitive information with Pakistani handlers for several months," Reddy said.

Kumar has been booked under the Official Secrets Act and the Indian Penal Code for sharing classified information. The police are also investigating whether he had any accomplices in India.

The arrest comes at a time when the country is on high alert after the Uri attack and the subsequent surgical strikes by the Indian Army across the Line of Control. The government has been cracking down on individuals and groups suspected of sharing sensitive information with foreign entities.

The Home Minister said the state government is committed to ensuring national security and will not tolerate any attempts to compromise it. "We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that those who compromise national security are brought to book," Reddy said.
