Getty Images and Shutterstock Receive Second Request from the U.S. Department of Justice
April 2, 2025 - NEW YORK, USA - Getty Images and Shutterstock, two leading providers of stock images and footage, today announced that they have received a second request from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for information related to their licensing agreements with customers.
The second request, which is a more detailed and extensive review of the companies' business practices, follows an initial request made by the DOJ in October 2024. The initial request was part of the DOJ's ongoing investigation into the licensing and distribution of copyrighted images and footage online.
"We are cooperating fully with the DOJ's investigation and are providing the requested information," said a spokesperson for Getty Images. "We are committed to ensuring that our customers have access to the high-quality images and footage they need, while also respecting the rights of copyright holders."
Shutterstock echoed Getty Images' commitment to cooperation, stating, "We are working closely with the DOJ to provide the requested information and are confident that our business practices are in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations."
The investigation is focused on the licensing and distribution of copyrighted images and footage online, and the DOJ is seeking information from Getty Images and Shutterstock related to their agreements with customers, including the terms and conditions of those agreements.
The companies stated that they are not aware of any wrongdoing on their part and are confident that their business practices are in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The investigation is ongoing, and the companies will continue to cooperate fully with the DOJ.
