Tokyo Introduces Bitcoin Payments for Subway Rides
Toulouse Lets Commuters Pay Their Fare with Crypto
The city of Toulouse in southern France has become the first in the country to accept cryptocurrency payments for public transportation. As of this month, commuters can pay their fares using digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin at all bus and tram stations in the city.
The innovative move is part of a pilot program launched by the Toulouse Metropolis public transportation authority, in partnership with the French startup, Paytomorrow. The program aims to make public transportation more accessible and convenient for citizens, while also promoting the use of digital currencies.
To use the service, commuters simply need to download the Paytomorrow app and link their cryptocurrency wallet to the app. They can then pay their fare using the app, which will automatically convert the cryptocurrency into euros and debit the payment from their account.
The Toulouse Metropolis public transportation authority has partnered with several cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets to facilitate the transactions, including Bitstamp, Coinbase, and Ledger. The authority has also worked with local businesses to accept cryptocurrency payments for goods and services, in a bid to create a wider ecosystem for digital currencies in the city.
The pilot program is expected to run for six months, with the goal of assessing the feasibility and effectiveness of accepting cryptocurrency payments for public transportation. If successful, the program could be expanded to other cities and countries, paving the way for a new era of digital payment systems.
Toulouse's bold move has been hailed as a major step forward for the adoption of cryptocurrency in everyday life, and could have significant implications for the future of digital payments. As the city looks to the future, it seems that the days of carrying cash and credit cards may soon be a thing of the past.
